Troop 651 is an active troop with an outdoor-oriented program. We encourage growth in the Scouting program through active involvement. Our youth members design and guide the program with an abundance of camping, hiking, canoeing, and other fun activities. Troop 651 follows the philosophy of Scouting's founders. As William "Green Bar Bill" Hillcourt stated in his Handbook for Scoutmasters in 1936: "Here, then, is Scouting in a nutshell: A game for boys under the leadership of boys with the wise guidance and counsel of a grown-up who has still the enthusiasm of youth in him. A purposeful game, but a game just the same, a game that develops character by practice, that trains for citizenship--through experience in the out-of-doors."
Youth growth in Scouting is directed and guided through advancement. In troop 651, we lead our advancement through the EDGE method: explain, demonstrate, guide, and enable. Through youth teaching youth, we seek to imbue not only Scout skills, but leadership and a sense of community. In addition to the youth leadership, troop 651 has a cadre of trained, experienced, and enthusiastic adult leaders. These leaders help oversee the program and guide the youth leadership. They also assist with advancement and often can serve as merit badge counselors.
The Scout handbook states that: "A Scout is thrifty. A Scout works to pay his way and to help others. He saves for the future. He protects and conserves natural resources. He carefully uses time and property." Troop activities are mostly funded through dues, although the troop does use fundraisers like popcorn sales to keep dues and fees as low as possible. Currently, dues run at $20 per month, which pays for registration, unit charter, advancements, and activities. Scouts are also expected to pay for their own uniforms and books. In addition, patrols organize outings with Grubmasters for food, which can run $10-15 per outing. Finally, additional events like summer camp or high adventure outings are a separate cost.
Join To join our troop, just fill out an online application and submit an initial fee of $25 (if you are new to Scouting) and $145 for yearly Council and National registration. In the meantime, anyone is free to visit our meetings at any time. The troop meets every Tuesday at 7-8:30 pm at the Panorama Youth and Family Services Center, 131 Richmar Drive, San Marcos CA.
